Top takeaways from the EV Summit 2022
How to make the EV transition successful?
👉 Thanks to the EV SUMMIT for a fantastic event showcasing an incredible group of people working together to make the EV transition and this industry successful.
💡 It is tough to whittle down the learnings, but here goes:
✅ Need for Speed
2030 is the target for net zero, but achieving decarbonisation of fleets requires more charging power in the UK's infrastructure.
Less than 50% can be charged at home. Until now, the focus has been on cars, but vans and HGVs must be better included.
Why this matters: In March 2023, the UK government is expected to provide requirements from local government, funding and pilot announcements. By setting the north star, the government (hopefully!) takes the risk and uncertainty out of investing.
✅ Ecosystem thinking
The grid is not designed for today's energy usage, e.g. we regulate voltage. EVs shouldn't be the sole model for reaching net zero, and significant innovation to bridge vehicle-to-home technology and benefit from new energy sources is critical.
Why this matters: Euan McTurk proposes energy costs could be reduced by 30% if we pivot around wind and apply a proper windfall tax. Forward-thinking companies like ScottishPower Power are already asking how the energy approach can be more egalitarian.
✅ Collaboration isn't optional
To hit net zero, changes are needed, such as:
Improving building standards to enhance the energy network.
Greater battery standardisation.
Improving the customer and driver experience.
Better customer service.
Greater access to charging (up to 64% don't have a driveway).
Businesses building a shared charging network and on-work charging solution.
Why this matters: Collaboration is necessary. There is no silver bullet. Organisations are recommended to form strategic alliances to amplify their impact.
✅ Modern materials
Battery innovation has provided a great option to help distribute energy and power.
Data is the new oil, assisting organisations in making real-world decisions, determining infrastructure and helping logistics firms differentiate via their green credentials.
Why this matters: These technologies will fuel the development of digital solutions that bridge the transition.
✅Helping people make the switch
Those outside the industry bubble don't know the basics. Upgrading costs can be a shock; business owners want clear transition guidance. Data helps build the business case and internal support.
Why this matters: The industry must ensure that EVs are viewed as the solution by delivering practical solutions. Switching should be as simple as buying a cup of coffee.
✅ Autotrader shows EV sales have plateaued
Cars have become more expensive, and growth will plateau if affordable choices don't exist.
Why this matters: Developing a more buoyant second-hand market to make EVs accessible and stimulate the sub £30,000 bracket is critical.
